The Hong Kong Prize and Other Awards

The Hong Kong Prize is a prestigious award for scholarly work by scholars of the humanities in the early stages of their careers. The prize aims to recognise and encourage their contribution, and is a way to acknowledge and reward the first monograph published or contracted for publication by any recognised academic press.

The Prize is a HK$25,000 award for an outstanding dissertation in any subject, written by a full-time or part-time student of the University of Hong Kong who has completed a master’s degree or above, and has passed their PhD defence. The Scholarship is open to students from all over the world, regardless of their scholastic background or previous academic achievement.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Hong Kong Marathon, title sponsor Standard Chartered Hong Kong has raised the prize money to support local runners, with permanent residents who complete the race in under 3 hours (sub 3) for men and sub 3:30 for women receiving an extra HK$10,000. The Special Incentive Award is the highest in the event’s history and reflects the Club’s commitment to champion local running and encourage all Hong Kong people to participate in the Marathon Challenge, the largest annual charitable road running competition in the city.

Five scientists from Hong Kong universities have received this year’s BOCHK Science and Technology Innovation Prize 2024, pocketing a total of HK$2 million in awards for their cutting-edge research and contributions to the development of artificial intelligence and robotics, life and health, new materials and new energy, advanced manufacturing and fintech. They include HKPhil Music Director and Conductor Dr Deng Hongkui, HKKU Professors Zhang Tao and Li Yadong, and HKUST Research Fellow Sun Binyong.

Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) made history in Canada this year as the first university in the region to win the Grand Prize at the International Invention Innovation Competition iCAN 2024, as well as a further 18 awards, including three Gold Medals, four Silver Medals and five Special Awards. The success demonstrates EdUHK’s exceptional ability to innovate and create value for society through a diverse range of projects in the areas of healthcare, educational and sustainable development technologies.

The HK$5,000 HK Global Development Prize aims to gather innovative ideas for the establishment of an Official Development Assistance programme in Hong Kong, and to promote sustainable development and a stronger Hong Kong role on the global stage.
