The Hong Kong Prize 2024

The Hong Kong Prize is an annual award given by the Hong Kong Academy for Humanities to recognize outstanding scholars at early stages of their research careers in humanities studies. The award consists of an engraved gold medal and a prize fund of HK$25,000. The prize is funded by the Academy, the Bank of China and the Hang Lung Foundation.

This year’s ceremony saw a record number of entries, with 12 papers winning awards, including a record-breaking five championships and seven first runners-up at the 2024 competition. Senior reporter Edith Lin and news editor Jeffie Lam secured the top prize in the Best Scoop category for their report exposing unauthorised structures added to luxury properties, while a team from the South China Morning Post took second place in the same section with a series of articles on a controversy surrounding a Dubai prince’s decision to shelve plans to open a family office in Hong Kong.

A total of 16 teams were shortlisted for this year’s contest, which was held in partnership with the Applied Mathematics Society and sponsored by Hang Lung Properties. Each shortlisted school will receive a medal and a certificate, while the shortlisted team members will also share equal amounts of the Merit Prize awarded to their schools by the HKJC. The winning team will also receive a hotel package.

HKJC’s security and customer service departments rigorously check all materials used for the draw, from boxing to transport, as well as the numbered balls and the drawing machine itself. The numbered balls are examined by X-ray and the draw machine is locked in a safe after each draw.

As part of the programme, a special prize ceremony and talk was held to recognise the winners. In the talk, the HLMA committee presented the winning teams with their medals and certificates. They also shared their inspiring experiences and perspectives on the transforming power of math. Two HLMA past winners, Dr. Owen H. KO of the University of Hong Kong and Ms. Ewina PUN of Brown University, were also invited to moderate the event.
