What Is Domino’s?

Domino’s is a pizza chain that serves hot and fresh meals to customers across the United States. The company uses targeted internet advertising and direct marketing methods to reach and retain customers. It also partners with sports leagues and music events to attract and foster brand loyalty.

A domino is a flat thumbsized rectangular block with a line down the middle separating its ends into two squares each bearing from one to six dots or pips. Like dice and playing cards, dominoes can be used in a wide variety of games. There are many different types of domino games, and each game has its own unique rules.

The most common and well-known domino game is called double-six. It is played by two players and requires a set of 28 dominoes, which are usually shuffled and arranged into a boneyard. Players then draw tiles from the boneyard until they have seven, which they place side by side on their own domino board or table. Each player scores for every multiple of five or more in the opponent’s hand, and the first to place all their dominoes wins.

In some games, each player places a domino edge to edge against another to form a positional pattern, such as a row of five or a cross. The resulting positions then become targets for other dominoes to be placed, and the game continues until all the positions are filled or no more moves can be made. In addition to positional games, there are number games where the player must place a specific number of dominoes according to a predetermined rule before they can score.

Some dominoes are made of a natural material, such as bone or silver lip ocean pearl oyster shell (mother of pearl), ivory, or a dark hardwood such as ebony, with black or white pips inlaid or painted on. Other sets are made from polymer materials, such as a type of bakelite. While these sets are functionally identical to the traditional wooden or metal ones, they can be produced much more quickly and cheaply.

A person who specializes in creating domino arrangements is known as a domino artist. Hevesh, for example, has created domino displays for movies, TV shows, and events, including the launch of the album of pop star Katy Perry. Hevesh posts videos of her creations on her YouTube channel and has more than 2 million subscribers. She has even worked on team projects with hundreds of thousands of dominoes. It can take several nail-biting minutes for her larger installations to fall.

A domino effect is a sequence of events that cascades from a single cause, in the same way as a falling row of dominoes. The term can be used both literally, to describe a series of actual events, or metaphorically, to illustrate causal linkages in larger systems such as global finance or politics. The phenomenon was popularized in the United States by the 2002 film, “The Domino Effect.” These effects can be either positive or negative and often have unforeseen consequences.
