During the late 19th Century, these pools were constructed primarily to protect swimmers from drowning and shark attacks, but also as a conciliatory gesture by local councils because swimming at beaches in daylight hours was illegal until 1903 and landowners did not want swimmers near their properties. Now they’re a much-loved feature of the Sydney coastline and many of them are classified by the National Trust.

The best way to see the pools is to take a coastal walk, or drive and park at nearby car parks and walk from there. In summer, you can also join a guided tour or a snorkelling trip to the ocean pools.
