hongkong prize

The prize aims to encourage students in Hong Kong, especially those in secondary schools, to conduct research into topics related to Hong Kong history and culture. The results of such research may be published in academic journals or books, and can contribute to a greater understanding of Hong Kong’s role in the world.

Winners will receive prizes of up to HK$10,000 and have the opportunity to present their ideas to key stakeholders in the development sector. In addition, the winning submission will also be considered for inclusion in a world-class exhibition organised by the Hong Kong Science Museum.

It is open to all enrolled secondary school students in Hong Kong. Students are required to be nominated by their teachers and the nomination deadline is 16 September.

The judging process will be conducted by a panel of judges, with the final decision to be made by the judges. The Judges’ Prize of HK$8,000 will be awarded to the student whose artwork gets the highest score from the judges, and a HK$20,000 grant will be given to the nominated school.

A prize ceremony will be held every year, bringing together scientists and business leaders to celebrate the achievements of the winners and honour them for their dedication and commitment in advancing science and technology. It also provides an opportunity to raise Hong Kong’s profile in the international arena.

Founded by Run Run Shaw, the Hong Kong Prize is one of the world’s most prestigious science awards. The Shaw Prizes are awarded annually in the fields of Astronomy, Life Science and Medicine, and Mathematical Sciences, and honor researchers who have achieved outstanding contributions to mankind through their scientific achievements.

This year’s five prize winners (individuals or teams) include the 2022 Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Laureate Chai Yang for developing disruptive in-sensor computing paradigms for artificial vision sensors, and the Life Science and Medicine Prize Laureates Ng Siew Chien, Yuen Kwok-yung, and Joseph Sriyal Malik Peiris for their invention of noninvasive testing technologies for gastrointestinal tract and autism spectrum disorders respectively.

The Hong Kong Prize is sponsored by Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited. It was established in 2022 to reward outstanding scientists and research-related institutions set up in Hong Kong or the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area for their scientific breakthroughs with influences on and transformation of R&D outcomes in Hong Kong and beyond.

Besides the monetary awards, winners will be honoured for their research achievement with a medal and certificate at an award ceremony. Their work will be promoted through media channels, and their research projects will be showcased at an international conference in Hong Kong to further promote Hong Kong’s research achievements and enhance the image of Hong Kong on a global stage. The Prize also aims to nurture and cultivate young researchers, who are the future of Hong Kong’s technological innovation. They are vital to fostering the development of the SAR and the country through their research and technological development, and enabling Hong Kong to contribute to the global advancement of science.
