The Basics of Roullete
Roullete, or roulette as it is more commonly known in the United States, is a casino game played with a small ball that is released into a revolving wheel. Players make bets on which red or black numbered compartment the ball will come to rest in as the wheel comes to a stop. Bets are made by placing chips on a betting mat, where each chip represents a specific amount of money that a player wishes to bet. The game has several different variants and rules, which differ slightly from one gambling establishment to the next.
Before a roulette game begins, players must first set a budget and establish the size of a betting unit based on their bankroll. Then they should choose a table within their budget and place their chips in the desired area on the betting mat. Each table has a placard describing the minimum and maximum bets allowed, so players should check this information before beginning the game.
While there are many theories about the origins of the game, it is generally accepted that it was invented in the 18th century in France. It was derived from earlier games such as hoca and portique, and eventually evolved into its current form in the casinos and gambling dens of Europe.
The roulette wheel consists of a solid wooden disk, which is slightly convex in shape. It has a number of metal compartments, or pockets, painted alternately in red and black, around its circumference. Thirty-six of these pockets are numbered nonconsecutively from 1 to 36, while two green compartments on the American version of the game (which is not available at online casinos) carry the signs 0 and 00.
When a bet is placed, the croupier spins the wheel and then rolls a ball onto it. When the ball has landed in a pocket, it is called a “win.” Winning bets are paid out and losing ones removed from the table. The process then starts again.
If you’re playing at an online casino, look for a game that features European roulette. It has a lower house edge than the American variant, and it is easier to win. Also, it’s a good idea to play French roulette if possible, as this has the la partage rule that cuts the house edge on outside bets to 1.35%.
